Bag Ladies

I found a fabulous new marketing idea over the weekend at the Austin downtown farmer's market. Everywhere I looked, I saw women, and even a few men, carrying light weight, bright orange "pumpkin bags." They looked like a large plastic grocery bag, but in a shiny cloth. Where could I get this adorable Halloween bag?! I wanted one...nay, needed, one of these bags!

Finally, in the midst of the applebutter and mushrooms, there was the stand and lo' and behold, the bright orange Halloween bags. Free! They were free! The bags were a promotional item for a new company, Blue Avocado, which is launching its products this week, according to the two women owners who took my check as I paid for another bag right there on the spot. What products do they sell? Revolutionary...they sell grocery bags.

Ok, not so revolutionary, considering the Europeans have been using re-useable grocery bags or baskets for generations now. And, frankly you can get a grocery bag for 99 cents at most supermarkets these days instead of using the environment damaging plastic bags. However, what is revolutionary is that these bags are incredibly cute, easy to carry, and made of recycled materials which makes them perfect for the current economy. Everything from the colors to the affordability to the eco-friendly nature to the functionality to the branding (see the logo above) is tied together in a neat package.

No, I'm not getting anything for this blog posting, just pure excitement that a new business has an opportunity to really make it in this crazy economy and because of marketing. Congratulations to Blue Avocado for a great concept come to life. I'm already a customer!
